Anne Magdalene Risinger Williams's Experience

Anne Magdalene Risinger Williams - Provisionally Certified Teacher - 6th grade math at Fulton County Schools

August 2013 - May 2014 | Paul D. West Middle School, East Point, Georgia

Preparing Lesson Plans according to Common Core Standards (6th grade) to meet students needs. Co-taught with a special education teacher for two periods. Students math levels were from 2nd grade to 9th grade according to StarMath. Accommodated students with IEP and 504 plans. Math warm-ups in the Fall semester started with 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and on-level math problems. In the Spring, the problems started with CRCT problem, 3rd, 4th, and on-level problem. Used gradual release model, "I do, You do, We do." in conjunction with Learnzillon.com videos. Created guided notes for Learnzillon.com according to student reading level. Emerging learners received notes with tracing words. Progressing students received notes with fill in the blank. Mastery students received the Learnzillon.com graphic organizer. With the gradual release, Emerging students start with simpler math problems with hands-on models. The progressing students had a choice to either start working on problems on their own or join the emerging group. The Mastery students used student peer grouping to solve word problems. Once the Emerging students were released to do problems on their own, I would go around to the Progressing and Mastery students to check for understanding. Students worked in jigsaw groups in math tasks. Math tasks were designed to be culturally relevant for African American and Hispanic students and support their learning needs. For example, the students had to find the surface area of their locker and make a net with butcher paper. The students had to compare their measurements to the net they created. Another task was comparing cell phone plans with writing algebraic expressions. This was set-up in a graphic organizer with explicit examples. Anglo names are replaced with African American and Hispanic names. Due to these teaching strategies, Anne Magdalene Risinger Williams increased emerging female minority learners test scores from 5th grade by 1% to 5%
